Inspiration from a Teenage KetoKid

Thanks to the Charlie Foundation for sharing this amazing video made by a teenage keto kid. And thanks for sharing, Emily. You are an inspiration.

This is especially timely for us, as we are contemplating the idea that Nora might be on long-term diet therapy of some kind. But seeing other Emily’s video about traveling, smuggling her food into concerts, working in restaurants, applying to 15 colleges across the country (or so, I lost count)… I see that Nora’s future is no different from any other bright young girl who lives life to the fullest.

I also wonder what Nora would say if we turned on the video camera and asked her about her diet. Hmmmm, stay tuned.

  1. An inspiring video, especially to us moms with girls who some day will be teenagers! Things have been stable with my daughter, who was actually misdiagnosed with temporal lobe E., put on meds, and suffered horrible side effects. We eventually found out about dietary therapies, stopped meds and started the low glycemic index diet on our own, until we could get her seen at another hospital… Hannah, turns out, has benign Rolandic epilepsy.

We’re in such a different place now, she hasn’t had another grandmal for about 7 months, and is off meds. Hannah is on a ‘relaxed’ Low Glycemic Index diet, which we feel has helped control symptoms related to her diagnosis (e.g., tingling of her hands, or another seizure– we don’t want to just “wait” for another). We still rely on your recipes, Christie, especially for treats and snacks (since we don’t do sugars or artificial sweeteners).

It’s good to see a teenager advocating the keto diet. I will show the video to my daughter, it will make her feel better knowing that she (along with your Nora) is not the only one on a special diet!

    • Thanks for the update Nat! I’m glad to hear that you have made so much progress. Ug, a misdiagnosis is do damaging. We’ve thought about benign Rolandic for Nora too, but doesn’t seem to be it.

Wonderful to get such good seizure control from a relaxed LGI diet! That’s wonderful! It’s probably a good idea for Nora long term too.

      Keep up the good work!

  2. Thank you for your inspiring blog! I wondered if you could direct me to the video pf the teenage KetoKid you are talking about here. We are 2 months into the diet with my teenager, and she’s having a bad few days…she’s ready to throw in the towel….would love for her to see she is not alone!!

    • The link should be fixed now. Sorry! I think the link was lost when we reconfigured the blog. I hope she can find some inspiration too!
