By Linse Sullivan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>I am monitoring lunch time, opening fruit snacks and talking with students. A kindergartener comes up to me and asks, \u201care you a boy or a girl?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While colleagues rush over with apologies and admonitions, I love that question. Kids are curious, and so am I &#8211; why do you wonder that? Is it because of my haircut, my clothes, my interactions? In the United States, this percentage represents at least 20 million people. We also know: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/press-releases\/icymi-as-lawmakers-escalate-attacks-on-transgender-youth-across-the-country-some-gop-leaders-stand-up-for-transgender-youth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2022 is already a record year for anti-LGBTQ legislation<\/a>, with 300 bills filed and counting. Many of these bills specifically target transgender children. <ul><li>In comparison, 41 anti-LGBTQ bills were filed in 2018.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americansurveycenter.org\/public-still-at-odds-about-lgbtq-issues-in-public-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">50% of American parents feel uncomfortable by the inclusion of gay and lesbian characters and stories in elementary school library books<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Trevor-Project-Accepting-Adult-Research-Brief_June-2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Just one open and accepting adult in an LGBTQ youth\u2019s life can reduce the risk of suicide attempts<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My experience as a queer educator<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As an elementary school music teacher, I have taught hundreds of students, received \u201chighly effective\u201d on my evaluations, and led many successful community events and concerts. Students and I learn and laugh together, and make life-changing music in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as a trans and nonbinary queer* educator, I often feel like my job accomplishments are overshadowed by fear and ignorance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do families or community stakeholders see me as an asset, or as a danger? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can I share my skills and experiences, or will I be asked to \u201cstick to the facts?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will I be protected against attacks based on my identity, or will I be sacrificed to public opinion? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Limited workplace protections<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the United States,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/15\/us\/gay-transgender-workers-supreme-court.html\"> I am not yet fully protected against job discrimination because of my gender identity<\/a>. Dress codes and \u201cprofessional\u201d behavior based on gender and racial stereotypes are linked to my job evaluation. Finally, recent anti-LGBTQ+ laws may seem shocking to some, but <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6176224\/florida-dont-say-gay-history-lgbtq-rights\/\">these are just the next attempt to codify the violence and dehumanization<\/a> of people like me \u2013 and I feel my colleagues\u2019 silence on the matter deeply. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For trans folks of color or people with other intersecting identities, these questions become more pressing, and the answers more disappointing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Will I be protected against attacks, or will I be sacrificed to public opinion?<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, this journey has led to a reimagining of my teaching career. Now I live in a new state where I am closer to my family and employed by the comparatively LGBTQ+ friendly field of higher education.&nbsp; Online, I see glimpses of the future: queer professionals sharing their successes and challenges, whether they are transitioning, teaching about LGBTQ+ history and culture, or just living their lives. These small moments of joy remind me that our stories are still progressing &#8211; that there is still hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Next steps for allies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By sharing my story and the following resources, I hope that caregivers and professionals find the courage to show up for their gender-expansive and queer family, children, friends, and coworkers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I invite people to explore how race, language, health status, and other identities can create a unique experience for LGBTQ+ folks. For example, my life as a white trans person is <a href=\"https:\/\/williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/press\/ncvs-trans-press-release\/\">very different<\/a> from the potential experience of a trans woman of color. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resources<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many things parenting educators and other family support professionals can do to support LGBTQ+ community members, youth, family, and coworkers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Educate yourself on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/glossary-of-terms\">the terminology<\/a>&nbsp;and issues facing queer people, and have honest conversations about what you learn.<\/li><li>Enjoy books, shows, and music for and by the LGBTQ+ community:<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spl.org\/books-and-media\/books-and-ebooks\/staff-picks-for-kids\/lgbtq-picture-books-for-kids\">LGBTQ+ picture books for kids<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icpl.org\/books-more\/staff-picks\/lists\/celebrate-pride-books-middle-grade-readers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Celebrate Pride: Books for middle grade readers<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/education\/resources\/tools-and-strategies\/lgbtq-pride-month-and-education-resources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LGBTQ+ Pride month books and resources for parents, families, and caregivers<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sullivanmusic.org\/for-teachers\/lgbtqia-resources\">Playlists of music by LGBTQ+ musicians and composers<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Ask your workplace, community organizations, or local schools about what you can do to support their Pride month education and celebrations.<\/li><li>Write a positive note to your work, school, or community organization expressing your support for an inclusive and affirming environment, even if you don\u2019t know of any openly LGBTQ+ people there.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/righttobe.org\/\">Practice intervening and protecting people subject to hate and threat<\/a>.<\/li><li>Research what LGBTQ+ organizations are in your community and support them. For those in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, here are some examples:<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdxqcenter.org\/\">Portland Q Center<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/immigrationequality.org\/about-us\/\">Lesbian and Gay Immigration Rights<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackbeyondthebinarycollective.org\/\">Black &amp; Beyond the Binary Collective<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.confluencelgbtchorus.org\/\">Confluence Willamette Valley LGBT Chorus<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/transponder.community\/\">TransPonder<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/hivalliance.org\/\">HIV Alliance<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basicrights.org\/\">Basic Rights Oregon<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>*I use the term queer to describe myself, understanding that not everyone prefers this term. I suggest asking people how they identify and following their lead.
