This last week was a tough one for me. I am not meaning for this post to be sad or anything but figured I would talk about what happened with my dog.
Last week on Friday I could tell my dog was not feeling well so I took him into my local small town vet emergency room. They did blood work on him and realized his red blood cell count was so low their machine couldn’t read it. They were amazed he was alive. The red blood cells provide oxygen to the whole body his was some were around a number of 12 when a normal dog is about 40. So he needed a blood transfusion immediately. He is my best friend and still a young dog so I drove about 4 hours into the night to another town with a very good pet hospital (the vet didn’t think he would survive the drive there). He made it and we got him a transfusion to keep him stable. Then all the tests came. He has been in the hospital getting all kinds of tests for cancer or infectious diseases. Thankfully they all came back negative. So it was deemed that he randomly got an auto immune disease where his body is destroying his own red blood cells. They don’t know why it happened. So we have him on some medication that will hopefully in the long run help him go back to normal.
As you can imagine it has been an emotional roller coaster for me being told multiple times he is going to die any moment. Thankfully though he should be okay. I hope. Today I get to take him home, on National rescue dog day. I thought that was fitting. Next week will hopefully be better with progress on the project. Stay strong and fight for those you love.
