My biggest success during this course was being able to experience and learn a new form of programming with like-minded colleagues. No one on the team knew how to develop games in Unity or create scripts in C#. Over this quarter, it was definitely a struggle to learn these things from scratch and knowing what would be feasible to develop versus overly complex. I think our breakthrough would have to do with finally learning how to create scripts and animate objects. We are creating a 3d escape room and this opened up a lot of creative possibilities in regards to developing the puzzles. I learned a lot about how game design works and the overall volume of work it takes to make simple things happen in game design. Unity may not seem that intuitive at first, but it gives you all the tools you need to create the game you want. Besides paying for assets of course.
Going over the SWOT analysis for this course:
Strengths: The freedom that capstone gives and liberties to create a project of your choosing has been really fun. It provides a more intrinsic sense of motivation as we all chose our own projects and will develop the things that we want to
Weakness: A glaring weakness in my experience was not understanding the volume of work that needed to be done for certain things. Being new to Unity and scripting in C#, things like designing the rooms could be quite tedious. Also the scripting process, especially for more complex puzzles, proved to be a huge time-intensive process that I was not aware of going into this. This led to many failed attempts at implementing puzzles that I thought were good ideas.
Opportunities: I can’t think of any specific things that could potentially make this course better as it is largely an individual effort. If anything, it would be nice to have a database of past projects and see how they split up their weekly time per task.
Threats: I don’t see how any threats would affect this course. Perhaps if students want to take their project further than this class, it could complicate things if there are multiple groups that pursue the same project and run into copyright issues.
