As we are approaching the end of the fall term, I\u2019ve been doing a lot of reflecting, and the realization that this could be the last fall term to be in college is a good feeling. Lately, I\u2019ve been trying to finalize internships and figuring out my next steps going into the winter and spring terms. Overall, it\u2019s been pretty exciting, to say the least. In this blog, I want to talk more about the things I\u2019ve learned going through the process of applying to internships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the biggest things I\u2019ve learned is how important having an online presence is in terms of showcasing your work such as a LinkedIn and a public GitHub page. However, as a student, you aren\u2019t expected to know it all as someone who has been in the field longer. I\u2019ve learned it is important not to be so hard on yourself as there are so many people in our shoes. When applying to internships, it\u2019s always good to have a cover letter saved as well since a lot of applications have the option to upload one. Even if it\u2019s not required, the more information about yourself the better and more likely you are to stand out. Networking has been another helpful thing. Connecting with current employers about opportunities, peers, and people on LinkedIn is are great options to get your foot in the door and to make yourself known. I know it can be challenging to put yourself out there at first, but once you start, it becomes easier. Lastly, is to be persistent. It can feel overwhelming and like a letdown when you\u2019ve applied to many places but being persistent will up your chances a lot. The most important thing is to not give you and try to keep a positive mindset.
