Week 2: Experience with discrimination

The scenario is that I have come across an article claiming that my favorite company is facing a lawsuit because they have been actively discriminating against their employees based on their ethnicity. (Note this is fictional)

Would the outstanding claims of discrimination change the way you felt about the company? Would it influence your decisions to support that company? Would it change whether or not you applied to work for that company in the future? Why or why not?

As a part of the entertainment industry, I find immense pride in my favorite company, a foreign entertainment giant based in Korea. They are renowned for producing not just female and male idol groups, but also for their exceptional talent in singing, dancing, and even rapping. The fan base of these groups is a testament to their success and popularity.

In these idol groups, a hierarchical structure is prevalent, with centers and leaders playing pivotal roles. The centers, often the face of the group, are held to a higher physical and model standard. This position also comes with the privilege of solos, a clear indicator of favoritism. However, this hierarchy also leads to discrimination, as evidenced by the unequal distribution of screen time in music videos.

These discrimination actions rub me the wrong way and make me hesitate to plan to work for them if I ever decide to go into the entertainment industry. However, studying business for a while, I can understand why they take those measures. The saying “it’s just business” can involve some unethical decisions. If there were actual hard evidence that they not only publicly discriminated against them but also that the treatment behind the scenes was very dishonest, I would not support them any longer. There is a sense of justice if faced with unethical matters, especially in a work environment. I want to be involved in a work culture where we strive to be the best and know how to be decent human beings.
