I am currently working on a group project for this class with 2 other team members. The core technologies that we are working on and applying are all things that I would consider myself not an expert in but this project has allowed me to explore and learn new things that I would not have probably done on my own time.
Something for this project that I wanted to apply and utilize more was chatGPT. Not necessarily to have it write code for me but for debugging common errors that I see and I have found this to be immensely useful and made coding honestly fun again for me.
For example I was hitting a lot of console errors with my Javascript (a language I would consider myself not that proficient with). I would just input the error like I normally do into Google search but into chatGPT.
With a traditional search like Google, I would need to parse several stack overflow posts, multiple geekforgeeks articles to try to understand what error I made and try to implement fixes.
With chatGPT, the responses are much faster. The responses typically give me 1-5 possible reasons it could be broken and I find myself finding my own bugs quicker, learning quicker, and wanting to try to implement things that are out of my comfort zone because I can ask simple questions that typically I would hit blocker after blocker with.
Initially I thought a platform like chatGPT would replace engineers into the future and possibly introduce problems into academia. But now that I have actually used it, understand the pros and cons of it I find that it lowers the barriers of entry to learn, and apply my learning quickly. Similar to YouTube and how short videos have immensely helped students who are learning remotely as well.
