One of the main challenges in developing a good job description is accurately capturing what a role is without inhibiting the potential for growth. Overly descriptive or specific descriptions can affect how potential candidates feel about the role which can deter highly qualified candidates who may not fit in perfectly as to how the job is described. As a remedy to this issue, job descriptions should focus on the essential workings of the job and desired qualifications while still leaving room to improve upon skills. Another important thing to keep in mind is to keep job descriptions current, according to the reading “Job worth doing: Update job description”, it can be detrimental in multiple ways if a job description does not match the actual job. It is the responsibility of the managers and HR to come up with a description that is accurate based on what they see around them by observing employees and taking stock of what is happening around them. Also in fast-paced environments where things are constantly changing and evolving, it is beneficial for all parties if the job description is continually updated to properly reflect what is required of the applicant and what they will actually be doing.
Developing and maintaining accurate and effective job descriptions requires an innovative approach in order to balance their specificities in ways that are accurate, but inclusive to potential candidates, continually reevaluating descriptions and changing them along with the position is a surefire way to satisfy the applicants and company.
