An international assignment for work has always been a thing of interest to me. My love for travel and experiencing new cultures has kept me open to this opportunity. That being said I would need to consider the expatriate compensation of the position. The top things that would influence my decision includes housing and utilities allowance and relocation assistance payments, tax considerations, and if the location falls into one of the criteria that uses hardship allowances (Martocchio pg. 311-320). Along with these I would also take into consideration the language barrier of the host location.
The cost of relocating and finding housing for the international assignment would be one of the highest costs. Having assistance and allowances to help with this process would make me more comfortable with the idea of this big change. In addition to the initial money saved this would also make me more comfortable to be able to save money to put towards housing when finished with the assignment.
Tax considerations would need to be considered as well. I would need to be insured that I am not being double taxed and have a good understanding of how my taxes would change given this new position.
In terms of areas with hardship allowances I would be less likely to accept the position. This is simply for the dangers and stress that these locations would put on me by taking this position. If the assignment was pretty short and was centered around helping these areas I would consider the position, however a long term assignment may be too much for me in this situation.
If this position opportunity occurred once I have children another important factor would be education reimbursements. I would want to ensure that they are able to receive a quality education without language barriers. To ensure this often children have to attend a private school when in the host country.
