Week 5 – Blog Post: Typical vs. Maximal Performance

As a business owner making the right choice for hiring is crucial especially when filling an important role in my company. In the proposed dilemma choosing between Avery who has high potential but low performance and Jamie who is consistent but has limited potential, I would hire Jamie. For a company I believe having a stable and dependable person like Jamie can really make a business thrive because she can consistently complete the task I need, but gets flustered in situations outside her routine. Avery’s peak performance is attractive however not being consistent can really make it hard to rely on him when he’s unreliable. For the business the operations need someone who’s consistently shows up and delivers the work needed to keep things running. Jamie is perfect for this role because she is predictable and would help create trust within the team because she shows reliability which in my opinion is better than Avery’s high potential.

I would put Avery in a marketing section or design because having such brilliance if he could have a breakthrough idea it can help set the company apart from others. In this field even if Avery is slightly a slacker but has a great idea because of his intelligence and leads to a viral product or campaign is far more significant then day to day operations. Creating a product or campaign that boost the business values significantly is irreplaceable.

Jamie would be perfect for an HR job or customer service role. These positions require accuracy and routine which is perfect for Jamie who excels in everyday task. These jobs depend on details and commitment to doing things right consistently. In this role Jamie’s is better because having consistency here is better then the brilliance Avery has in these roles.

Thanks for sharing, i enjoyed reading your perspective. It’s clear that you really based your hiring decision around balancing performance potential and reliability in hiring. I really like how you differentiated the value each candidate brings to different roles within the company. I agree with your perspective of consistency, especially within roles like HR and customer service is essential. In those sort of positions, trust, attention to detail, and routine can make or break internal operations and client relations. I agree Jamie’s the better hire for this role due to her ability to stay on task and deliver more reliably than Avery. I do like the fact that you thought Avery is better off in a more creative space. I agree. I think a creative or a hospitality style job would work best for Avery due to the use of his ability to be able to perform high in high pressure environments and in environments that he does not have to perform that high daily only when needed. Overall great post!

Hi Jesse,

I agree, if I had to decide whether to hire Jamie or Avery I would likely also go with Jamie. In my opinion, consistency is more valuable than maximal performance for most jobs. I also agree with you, however, that people with a higher ability level like Avery fit best in creative roles. From marketing to professional sports, people with high maximum performance potentials can display helpful break-throughs in critical moments.
