Week 3 – Blog Post: Job Descriptions

The last couple of jobs I applied for and looked at were all severing jobs. The tasks were put down as bullet points and they were very simple. The job description really didn’t drive me away from the job because serving is kind of similar at each place you work at. The other factor that adds to it is whether or not the restaurant is a fine dinning one or not because that will decide how you have to approach customers. Working at a fine dinning restaurant will also have to serve certain ways. For example the last fin dinning restaurant I work at said that you cannot use a serving tray when bring the food because it looks unprofessional. There were some other rules fine dinning rules you had to follow such as dress code, how you talk to customers and lastly how you brought the dishes out to the customer. The serving job was very similar to other serving jobs just a little more uptight on things compared to working at a brewer. When working at a brewery you didn’t have to dress as nice and were in a relaxed feeling environment. At some really nice restaurants the environment feels very snobby and when your working at the brewery the environment feels very soothing and friendly.

Below is an example of the job task:

  • Customer Service
  • Menu Knowledge
  • Tableside Service
  • Order Taking and Execution
  • Table Management
  • Teamwork
  • Problem Solving

Qualifications:

  • Experience
  • Communication Skills
  • Presentation Skills
  • Wine Knowledge
  • Customer Service Skills
  • Food Knowledge
  • Attention to Detail

Week 2 – Blog Post: Experiences with Discrimination

If I came across a creditable article about my favorite company had been accused of widespread discrimination against individuals from an ethnicity, culture, or belief system I associate with it would drastically change my perspective of the company. The first thing I would look into is how scholarly is the article and if its solid or if there a potential misconception. This is just something I do a lot these days because there is so much misinformation on the internet and would have to do research of my own. after confirming the truth then I could no longer associate with that company to the best of my ability.

I would also have to see how the company reacts to the situation. If the company is taking responsibility for what happened and will also take accountability to move forward? Or is the company trying to sweep things under the rug and deflect? Depending on how the company responds will also shape my perspective of using or applying to that company in the future.

Looking at a larger picture if I still supported the company after these horrible allocations came out of their unethical practices then I’m enabling them. As a consumer of the company or potential worker my choices show what I tolerate and what I don’t tolerate. Over all if the company failed to reform I would likely not use the company anymore let alone apply to it for a potential job. This would be in all aspects financially, socially and professional.

MGMT 448 The Case for Recruitment & Selection

Companies that designate more resources to marketing and advertisement could potential spend less then focusing all the resources on employee recruitment and selection. The reason is that because if the company markets its self in a way that they appease to the the people they want in there company. The company spends less money on individuals and more money finding people or talents that they want to join there company. By marketing to the people they want in there company they are also reaching a larger audience then auditioning and spending large sums of money on individuals that may not even be hired by the company. The company could potential be saving more to focuses on other productive avenues in the company making it grow even more then anticipated. The process is also helping filter people who wouldn’t qualify normally out by marketing and advertising exactly what the company is looking for. however the company may face some potential drawbacks because of this method.

The potential draw backs to marketing and advertising instead of focusing on employee recruitment and selection is that biases may accrue. because your looking for a certain type of person it could create discrimination in the hiring process which is not a good thing for the company. Also since the recruitment and selection process is not as through it could lead to hiring a couple bad people which could affect the company in a negative way. One way is that you hiring someone who is toxic and there toxicity spreads to the other coworkers causing a loss in work progression. The toxic co workers could influence other people because we are humans who are social beings.

MGMT 448 Job Application Experience

The last job I applied at was a server position at a fine dinning restaurant inside a hotel that is very popular in the city I live in. I was very excited for the interview process and came into the interview dress appropriately however I was shocked when I showed up to the restaurant. The manager who was in charge of my interview was not in the restaurant that day. I had to get his contact information from the restaurant and call him to figure out what was going on. The manager answered my call and gave me an apology as he said that he forgot which made me feel like the restaurant was not as professional as I believe it to be. Not showing up at the designated time that they set really reflected poorly in my eyes and very unprofessional. We reschedule the interview for another day however I was not found of my experience so far.

I finally came in and got to talk to the manager I was interviewing with who was a pretty mean guy that didn’t seem like her cared for his job. The manager started the interview off by asking my experience and I let him know that I have a lot of experience and showed him my resume. he looked at my resume and said that he was not really impressed by it but would still like it hire me for a different position.

The process of the interview was already poor in my eyes and the way he behaved when he was interviewing me really made me not want to work at the restaurant. I was offered the job however I did not take it because of how I was treated and how unprofessional their managing staff was. They had many issues in the interview process and I could only imagine how bad working for them would have been so I declined the offer and looked for work at another place.
