Thus, I thought it might be useful to write a blog post about the difference between educational service hours (direct and indirect) and support hours.<\/p>\n<div>Volunteer Service Hours which support the educational mission of the Extension Master Gardener Program are given highest priority. \u00a0Direct and indirect educational hours should constitute at\u00a0least 50%\u00a0of a Master Gardener&#8217;s\u00a0 required volunteer service hours in their initial year\u00a0and 50%\u00a0of a Master Gardener&#8217;s required volunteer service hours in their recertification years (i.e. at least 10 hours).<\/div>\n<h2><b>What are Direct Educational Hours?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Master Gardener activities that have the potential to directly increase knowledge, change attitudes or change behaviors in ways that promote sustainable gardening. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000\">A Master Gardener must be current on their certification, in order to participate in activities that qualify for direct educational hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><u>Plant Clinic (no matter the venue)<\/u>: \u00a0plant clinic is the venue through which Master Gardeners receive gardening questions and provide high-quality recommendations to the general public. \u00a0Typical venues for plant clinic include: \u00a0the Extension office (walk-in, phone or email),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/extension.oregonstate.edu\/extension-ask-an-expert\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ask an Expert<\/a>, farmer&#8217;s markets, Master Gardener events (e.g. plant sales, fairs), other community events.<\/li>\n<li><u>Instructor<\/u>\u00a0(at a conference, seminar series, Master Gardener training, speakers bureau, etc.): \u00a0includes the time it takes to research, prepare and deliver the presentation.<\/li>\n<li><u>Educational Gardens<\/u>\u00a0(demonstration gardens, youth garden, school garden, prison garden, garden tour): Teaching a class in an educational garden, leading a tour, preparing signage or educational displays, or other educational activities may count towards direct service hours.<\/li>\n<li><u>Writing an Educational Article<\/u>: \u00a0in a Master Gardener newsletter, for a local newsletter, or collaborating with an OSU Extension faculty member to write an Extension publication. Includes the time needed to research and write the article.<\/li>\n<li><u>Other approved activities<\/u>: as determined by your local Master Gardener coordination, in the context of current OSU Extension Master Gardener guidelines and policy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2><strong>What are Indirect Education Hours?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div>Indirect educational hours is time spent on activities <em>facilitate or support<\/em> the efforts of volunteer educators. \u00a0The volunteer is not directly teaching others (via plant clinic recommendations or gardening talks or demonstrations), but is supporting the efforts of others who are serving as direct educators. Examples include:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><u>Educational Event Planning<\/u>\u00a0(conference, seminar series, MG training)<\/li>\n<li><u>Master Gardener Training Class Mentor<\/u>: \u00a0assisting with the annual Master Gardener training course.<\/li>\n<li><u>Educational Garden Maintenance<\/u>: \u00a0Educational gardens require basic upkeep in maintenance, in order to be effectively used in educational outreach. \u00a0Thus, garden maintenance and upkeep activities <strong><em>might<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>qualify for direct educational volunteer service hours <strong><em>if<\/em> <\/strong>work in the garden supports an educational project or program, and if garden maintenance and upkeep activities are not the major focus of activity in the garden. \u00a0If garden maintenance and upkeep becomes the major focus of activity, it is time carefully examine the project, and re-calibrate back to the educational mission and focus of the Master Gardener Program.\u00a0 If you do not host at least two public outreach events, annually, in the garden, it likely does not qualify as an educational garden. Volunteer service hours in gardens that are not educational gardens do not count as indirect educational hours.<\/li>\n<li><u>Other Approved Activities<\/u>: \u00a0as determined by your local Master Gardener coordination, in the context of current OSU Extension Master Gardener guidelines and policy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #666666;font-size: 1.25rem;line-height: inherit\">What are Support Hours?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: inherit;font-size: 1rem\">These are hours spent on Master Gardener activities that are not focused on educational outreach. Instead, support activities help to support the mission of the OSU Extension Master Gardener Program. Examples of support activities include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><u style=\"line-height: inherit;font-size: 1rem\">Fundraiser<\/u><span style=\"line-height: inherit;font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0(plant sale, book sales, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><u style=\"line-height: inherit;font-size: 1rem\">Extension Office Support<\/u><span style=\"line-height: inherit;font-size: 1rem\">: \u00a0filing, database management, photocopies, or other duties related to the Extension office<\/span><\/li>\n<li><u style=\"line-height: inherit;font-size: 1rem\">MG Association<\/u><span style=\"line-height: inherit;font-size: 1rem\">: \u00a0including serving as an officer, board member or in an appointed position in a MG chapter or in the Oregon Master Gardener Association<\/span><\/li>\n<li><u style=\"line-height: inherit;font-size: 1rem\">Other Approved Activities<\/u><span style=\"line-height: inherit;font-size: 1rem\">: \u00a0as determined by your local Master Gardener coordination, in the context of current OSU Extension Master Gardener guidelines and policy<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been getting questions about volunteer service hour categories.
