Mental Health in the Workplace

A talk about the importance of health for employees

When it comes to health and safety in the workplace most minds jump to thinking about physical safety conditions such as equipment handling and protective gear. One of the biggest things that gets overlooked is the consideration of the mental health of those who are making the company run. The question of mission or people first is something that many industries neglect, stating that mission is more important because without it there is no business to hire people. Similar to how you’re supposed to put your own oxygen mask on first in a plane, you need to prioritize people before the mission. Work productivity and success goes out the window when the people working aren’t in the right headspace.

Based off of the results taken from the quiz, there are some things that I need to work on to help limit my stress. For the life stress inventory, I scored in the middle which put me at a 50% risk of stress issues in the future. Balancing the stress with things that help reduce issues is what I have been focusing on.

Stress is perhaps the most common mental health condition that causes problems in the workplace. Overwhelming amounts of work or if your job is subject to frequent levels of stress through activity are big contributors to productivity levels and revenue dropping. It is up to higher management to mitigate these concerns.

A positive mental health environment contributes to increased productivity, creativity, and overall enjoyment. When employees feel supported and valued, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated, leading to a more effective and dynamic workplace. This, in turn, can improve vital components of any business.

Many organizations such as Google, Merryl and Lynch, and Intel publically recognize the stress that can be associated with these jobs and provide a variety of options to allow employees to deal with mental health issues associated with the job. One of the biggest organizations that prides itself on positive mental health practices is the US Military. There are so many military resources that help with mental health all provided for members and their families, additionally, they increase leave days and allow more time for uniformed service members to also focus on the things they enjoy doing in life.
