Hello All,
My name is Tom and I, like many of you that might read this post, am in my last quarter at OSU taking the cs capstone course and intro to computer graphics as my final elective. I live in the Philadelphia area and I love the outdoors, traveling, and all things Philly sports.
I got started with computers at an early age but the thing that got me interested in software development was the day to day work I was doing in my prior career as a consultant. I was doing a lot of work with data modeling and one thing led to another and here I am (hopefully) switching careers with another degree.
I interned at a SaaS company this past summer focusing on back-end web development and thoroughly enjoyed it. I worked on end to end features from vetting the features with product and design to handling my own deployments and not crashing prod (though who knows if it did after the internship ended). I really enjoyed my time at the internship and still holding out hope for a return offer.
My interests in CS are more around systems concepts, multi-threading, parallel computing, networking, and distributed systems. If I had to pick a “dream” job, it would be working on low latency trading systems, but with the way the job market is right now, I’d be happy with anything software related.
That’s it for my first blog post, looking forward to my final quarter and learning some interesting stuff.
Go Birds!
