Labor Unions

The impact of labor unions and the conditions in which I may consider joining a union or even supporting a unionization effort is something that I have not put much thought into. This is why I have chosen to conduct some research to find out the pros and cons of labor unions in regard to employees, employers, and society more broadly. One of the main pros that I have found for employees looking to join unions is that unions promote higher wages and better benefits. This is a great benefit for the employees, however; it can be a con for the employer. The reason for this is that non-union employers have started to raise their wages to become more competitive when it comes to recruiting talented employees. Another pro of labor unions is that unions provide worker protections. This is very beneficial as an employee because it ensures your job security because it makes it easier to handle disputes and complaints with management and other workers. The con of this is that as an employer it makes it more difficult when it comes to terminating or demoting an employee who is not performing at high levels. This information that I have found goes along with what we have learned about unions in this course.

After reviewing this information, I believe that I would not be opposed to joining a labor union in the future. It can be very beneficial to an employee if they are someone with a family that they have to look out for since unions have higher job security and better benefits for yourself and your family.
