Having looked at some of the companies listed on the Fortune 100 Best Companies To Work For, I saw quite a lot of similarities among some of the top companies that align greatly with a lot of the topics we have covered this past week. Some key themes that I noticed among companies such as Stryker, American Express, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, and Intuit Inc., are extremely high percentages of people who feel proud of the work that they perform as well as a feeling of welcomeness, and a focus on customer satisfaction. From these trends noticed among the companies listed above, they seem to practice HR in a way that fosters a sense of belonging and encourages a culture where employees feel a lot of gratification from the work that they perform on a daily basis. By doing so, they have been able to put together a team of loyal workers who enjoy their jobs and feel that they contribute to the value of the company, all of which is talked about in depth in First, Break All The Rules: What The World’s Greatest Managers Do Differently by Marcus Buckingham and Curt W. Coffman as a part of this week’s readings.

The type of manager that I would hope to be is someone who can be respected for his knowledge and skill in their particular field, as well as someone who is approachable, helpful, and trusting of his employees. From this week’s readings, I feel that I have gained a better understanding of the impact that managers have on employees in comparison to other factors such as payment, benefits, etc., all of which are important as well in their own right. One aspect of being a manager that I feel would be difficult, as mentioned in this week’s readings, is the ability to treat each employee differently to maximize their individual potential as opposed to treating each employee the exact same. This is an important skill to have as a leader and as a manager though I feel that it would certainly be one of the more challenging aspects.
