Having reviewed the material for this week, I gained a newfound appreciation and understanding of the importance of creating and maintaining job descriptions within a company. In my own experience with applying for internships and jobs in the past, I have been exposed to many job descriptions and have experienced the appreciation of a detailed description as well as the frustration with poorly outlined descriptions, making this week’s material all the more interesting. I feel that a job’s description is the foundation of attracting new employees, maintaining current employees, and making sure that everyone fully understands the functions, importance, and tasks associated with different positions.

Challenges associated with job descriptions align with the ever-changing environment within the company itself. As a company grows, roles and responsibilities are subjected to constant change with new positions being created to address different needs and current positions being altered, making it all the more important to have consistently updated job descriptions so that employees fully understand the tasks and functions associated with their position.

In order to tackle these challenges, it is important to be consistent. In Job Worth Doing: Update Descriptions by Kathryn Tyler from this week’s readings, it is noted that many experts suggest updates on job descriptions at least once a year with more updates being included as necessary. I feel that it would be beneficial to incorporate reviews of job descriptions with updates added at least twice per year. This allows for a consistent evaluation of the duties and tasks associated with each position, thereby holding employees accountable to the work expected of them and protecting the employer from potential claims against them.
