Writing Exercise 4

(1) Nina Costantino and Donald L. Court in their research article titled “Enhanced levels of lambda Red-mediated recombinants in mismatch repair mutants” (2003) suggest that mutating the methyl-directed mismatch repair (MMR) system increases the probability of recombination, as cells are unable to use this system to correct recombinated sequences. (2) Costantino and Court found that MMR mutations showed a 25% frequency of recombination in the target cells, significantly higher than those without mutations. (3) The purpose of their research article is to develop an easier and more accurate alternative to traditional genetic engineering methods, and provide the groundwork for genetic modifications in other bacteria. (4) Costantino and Court create an intelligent and scholarly connection with their audience, specifically those in the microbiology and biology fields, given the specific language used.
