Welcome to my second blog post. Up until two months ago, my only relationship with computer science was as a student. With my internship at Garmin I have been fortunate to gain a small amount of experience practicing what I have learned in a professional setting. This has given me a glimpse of what life might be like after graduating in two months. These two experiences have been subtly different. In school mode, the open ended nature of studying and working on assignments, as well as my tendency to work on schoolwork at late hours, has made it difficult to turn my brain off from thinking about code. In work mode on the other hand, with earlier hours and a rigid, consistent structure, it is much easier to turn off my brain. I thoroughly enjoyed my evenings and weekends again when I was working full time. I found it easy to instantly switch mental gears when work hours finished, and I did not tend to think about coding at random moments in the night. I very much look forward to being in this state again when I graduate. In the meantime, I’m experiencing a little bit of both modes, school and work, simultaneously. It’s not too bad to go back and forth between these, but I am glad that it won’t last very long. I am looking forward to the mental balance that comes along with working full time, but not taking that work home with me. I hope that I will be able to maintain that balance, for the sake of my family and for my mental well-being.
