That is why we often use declarative statements as headers. So, instead of saying \u201cScholarships &amp; Financial Aid,\u201d which is descriptive and accurate, consider saying \u201cThat future that you want for yourself \u2014 for the world, is attainable.\u201d The latter conveys that financial aid is available while tapping into a bigger aspirational drive in students.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Keep it overt<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One debacle we often face in University Marketing is how overt to be with our words. The key thing to remember is that <em>we<\/em> may be inundated in our messaging, but <em>our audiences <\/em>are not. The old adage applies \u2014 it takes seven impressions to make a customer. So be BOLD! Don\u2019t waste your headlines on dry, informational tidbits or cheesy soundbites that don\u2019t convey the number one thing you want your audiences to know.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been practicing this principle on the OSU homepage:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Oregon State is a top 1 percent university in the world.<\/strong> We teach big, we think big, and it shows.\n<ul>\n<li><em>Message: world-leading research expertise and academic teaching<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wherever you come from, your story matters. <\/strong>Jeong-Bin Kim discovered a welcoming, diverse community a world away from South Korea.\n<ul>\n<li><em>Message: a sense of belonging in a community that values diversity and inclusion<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Your stage could be anywhere.<\/strong> Bard in the Quad is part of the vibrant arts tradition at Oregon State.\n<ul>\n<li><em>Message: an environment that encourages creative experimentation<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>Keep it intriguing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Our students and faculty are doing great things at Oregon State. Don\u2019t be afraid to brag on them, in language that everyone understands. Readers have short attention spans and are often looking at text on mobile devices.
