When writing about a specific person, ask them which pronouns they use for themselves (e.g.,\u00a0<em>she\/her\/hers<\/em>,\u00a0<em>he\/him\/his<\/em>,\u00a0<em>they\/them\/theirs<\/em>). If a person does not identify with male or female pronouns, the plural <em>they <\/em>is preferred.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For example, \u201cSamantha loves to paint. They take every painting class on campus.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The plural <em>they <\/em>is also helpful when writing about a general person whose gender is not known instead of using the <em>\u201che or she\u201d <\/em>construct or \u201c<em>s\/he\u201d<\/em><em>. Though casual, this is Oregon State\u2019s preferred style in marketing materials. <\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>For example, \u201cWhen a student moves into their residence hall, they should bring their own pillow.\u201d When possible, pluralizing can help you avoid this construct: \u201cWhenever students move into their residence halls, they should bring their own pillows.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Beyond pronouns, avoid all gender stereotyping in your writing. For example, use <em>firefighter<\/em>,\u00a0<em>police officer<\/em>,\u00a0<em>chair<\/em> or\u00a0<em>chairperson<\/em>.
