My Experience With Job Training

Training is very important for ensuring that employees are properly prepared for tasks involved in a job. Not only does training help to increase an employee’s performance on the job, it also works to mitigate employer liability. I’ve had varying experiences with my on the job training, some of which have been much more effective and beneficial to me.

One of the more lackluster experience training that I’ve received came from my experience working at a grocery store(I’ve talked about this location a few times now). One of the first issues that I faced with this job was a lack of effective onboarding. On my first day, I received a short training course, followed by immediately getting to work stocking shelves and working the register. It took me about two weeks to get familiar with many of the processes which I was meant to perform, as well as meet my managers and fellow coworkers. This interpersonal experience made me feel somewhat isolated from my coworkers. Additionally, this job struggled with the developmental aspect of training. There were multiple instances of me not receiving training/knowledge on how things are done, which often resulted in criticisms of my work. These instances always frustrated me, as they would criticize me for things I was unaware I needed to be doing. Without effective developmental training, I did not know how to perform some tasks in this job, resulting in poor performance and irritation on my part.

Comparatively, the job I have now has had much better training procedures. Compared to my grocery store job, the onboarding process for this current job has been much more beneficial. Within this job, my current boss did a much better job getting me socialized with those I’d be working with. I spent about the first week working with people and getting a feel for how the job is meant to be performed. I found this to be much more beneficial to me than my  experience with the grocery store job. Similarly, this week of training and socialization also helped me to develop more as an employee. The new hire  training was extensive and gave me a good understanding of the job, and the additional training I’ve gotten has been helpful for both my job as well as my own personal career development.
