Unions have always been a light of progression defending people from corporations. Nothing I read on my own research really countered the importance of unions and workers rights beyond people taking issue with paying union dues, anger around voting making it that you don’t always get to choose, and restrictions of labor due to mandatory breaks and working hours. All of these things in my opinion seem relatively small based on the history of what it was like before them.

I would join a union because the alternative is a regression of workers rights. In my eyes not joining or right to work is just a thinly veiled attempt to promote taking advantage of the working class. In the earlier years without unions came worker strikes and company stores. Looking back at the history, people not in unions were making less. I personally enjoy making more and am willing to not win all of the things I want due to voting. I would much rather be in a union where my wages and work conditions are regulated with channels to speak out. People fought for this right. In the industrial revolution it came down to workers strikes leading to lack in productivity, scabs creating resentment, and sometimes a great amount of violence.

At the end of the day I don’t want to live in a violent society where a few rich people take advantage of workers. What stops us from returning to work cities and being underpaid?
