Have your force been awaken after break to ready for Capstone? If not, you better wake it up ASAP or else you will regret it. In this post, I will share the two things I wish I have done differently, and you can do these to prepare you for this final challenge on your OSU journey.
Number 1: Find teammates (two good ones, if you can)
I start the class without any one I have worked with before, and this is one of my biggest regret because this class’s success depends entirely on you group work. I know you are probably friendless like me (that is why we are in Computer Science), but when you work with people along the way, CS 161, 162, 290, 325 or any class, find someone who are reliable and willing to work hard. Work with them a bit and see if you are compatible. Get their email or AOL (or Facebook if you are young and hip) and contact them later to see whether they take Capstone at the same quarter with you so you can work together. For me, I posted on Reddit r/OSUOnlineCS and found two strangers, not ideally since I have never work with them or share any intimate moments. I mean they said on Reddit that they work hard and 4.0 students, and who would lie on the Internet, and what could go wrong right? (Somebody save me!)
Number 2: Start early (earlier than your definition of early)
“If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” So find something you enjoy working on because you better be ready to spend minimum 100 hours on this project, more if you are unlucky with your teammates. Therefore, you should spend sometimes to discuss with your teammates regarding what you love to do: health, education, business, environment … Get an app idea and work on basic requirements so that you can have a project plan ready for the next step. When you are able to work out the project with your group, then you need to submit it to the professor for approval. If you start on Monday, the first day of the course, you have to find teammates, get project requirements, submit for approval, everything in three days. Not impossible, but quite low probability for success.
So I have discussed two things you can do to prepare for CS467. You can start to go out there and spread your wings to finds things you are passionate about, find teammates that can travel long distance together and makes life long friends along the way (yeah, you wish!).
