Tabitha Purice wins APhA-ASP Counseling Competition

Congratulations to P3 Tabitha Purice, the winner of the 2013 APhA-ASP Counseling Competition. Tabitha will represent the OSU/OHSU College of Pharmacy at the APhA-ASP National Patient Counseling Competition held in Los Angeles, CA, March 1-4 2013.

The purpose of the annual APhA-ASP Patient Counseling Competition is to encourage student pharmacists in their efforts toward becoming effective patient educators. Student pharmacists are provided with the opportunity to demonstrate their patient communication skills while also competing to become the representative for their college of pharmacy at the national competition. The competition began at the local level with a total of 17 participants. From the preliminary round, the top 10 participants were selected by the judges to advance to the final round based on their performance and interaction with the patient. The 10 finalists in the final round counseled a new patient with a more complex case scenario. The judges then reviewed the video recordings from the final round to select a winner from each class and awarded Tabitha Purice as the overall winner to represent our college at the national competition. Each round provided the participants a list of ten drugs to study from with one drug being selected for the competition. The participants were given five minutes to prepare and then five minutes to counsel a mock patient based on a scenario incorporating the chosen drug.

Listed below are the winners from each class and the chapter winner:

P1: Kristin Gafner

P2: Kenith Fritsche

P3: Arrash Vahidi

P4: Ian McClellan

OSU Chapter Winner: Tabitha Purice

This year the outstanding faculty members who evaluated the performance of the student pharmacists were: Lorinda Anderson, Ann Zweber, Natalea Braden-Suchy, and Roberto Linares. We would like to recognize their great efforts and support of the APhA-ASP patient counseling competition.

A special thank you to our final round patient, Dr. Juancho Ramirez, who attended both OSU and OHSU campuses to provide a consistent patient counseling scenario. We also appreciate our pre-pharmacy patient volunteers, Shade Oluloro and Mahmoud Hassanyn, our technical supporter, Gary Miller, and our resident, Crystal Little, for writing the patient cases.

We would also like to thank Pamela Levine, P4 winner of the 2012 Counseling Competition, for donating her gift card to the Oregon State College of Pharmacy to be used in this year’s competition. We are thankful for all the support from the students, faculty and the OSU College of Pharmacy!
