They will neither be ready to put in more work nor learn about a subject unless motivated to. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation is an important factor in success throughout the different stages of education. Teachers play a crucial role in encouraging students to give their best. While it is easier said than done, every student will be motivated differently and teachers need to put in time and effort. Some of the most educated teachers also find it hard to keep the students on track. So whether you are a new teacher or an experienced one, here are a few methods to help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/ed\/precollege\/psychology-teacher-network\/introductory-psychology\/student-motivation\">improve student motivation<\/a> so that they can live up to their potential. Let\u2019s take a look at them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Let students have some control&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, the teachers must guide students to keep them on track and motivated, but it is equally important to give them some choice on what is happening in the classroom. When students have a sense of control, it will keep them engaged. There could be times when you let them choose the kind of assignment or project they want to take up, which problems they want to work on, or how they want to work. This will motivate them to do more. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Clarify the learning objectives&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless the students are aware of the learning objectives, they will not be able to complete an assignment or even behave well in class. They must know what you expect of them so that they stay motivated to work. As soon as the year starts, you must lay out clear rules, expectations, and objectives so that they are not left confused and know what they are working towards.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Maintain a cordial environment&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students must be aware of the consequences of their actions, but there are positive ways to teach them instead of using threats. Students must learn in a threat-free and motivating environment. When there is a supportive, safe space, it instills belief in the student\u2019s ability. In such classrooms, teachers do not need to threaten them with the consequences of not doing things, but they will stay motivated to work. When communication is free and two-way, students understand their strengths and do their best. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Offer unique experiences<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every student learns differently and responds to the lessons in various ways. This is why hands-on experience is essential. Many like to read or work in groups and others like to learn things practically. To keep the students motivated, it helps to mix up the lessons so that the students with unique preferences will each get an opportunity to learn things and focus on what they like the most. It will also ensure that they remain engaged and focused.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Build positive competition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not always a bad idea to have your students compete with each other. It can motivate them to work harder to achieve their goals. You can build a friendly competitive spirit in the classroom through inter-class competitions, group games, or other opportunities where students can showcase their skills. Remember to offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edco.com\/appreciation-award-wording\">appreciation awards<\/a> to the one who wins the competition. It will be an exceptional source of motivation. Keep the needs and personalities of your students in mind to determine the awards for them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Give them responsibility&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter the age of your students, assigning them classroom jobs can help build a sense of motivation and give them responsibility. A lot of students look at it as a privilege and not as a burden. They will work hard to ensure that they are meeting expectations. You can have the students take turns helping out, so that everyone feels valued and important. Teachers must also allow the students to work in groups, do experiments, or take on projects with other students. It can get them excited about working with their friends and can also get them motivated to achieve a common goal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Give praise at the right time<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no other form of motivation that has as much impact as encouragement. Many adults also crave praise and recognition, so students are no exception. Whenever you find it deserving, give praise to the student. It will leave them with a lot of motivation and encourage them to continue working hard. Share the exemplary work with others and reward their success in public.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you take the steps to motivate your students, it is important to know them well and ensure the goals are achievable. Encourage self-reflection and help them figure out what to do to reach there.&nbsp;Help students identify their strengths and weaknesses so that they can work on them and make themselves better.
