A training that has effected me in a positive way and I found beneficial was when I decided to be a resident assistant when I attended the University of Idaho. I was thrilled when I was accepted be be an RA, I’ve always wanted a leadership role and wanted to do some good for other people. However I was not cut out to be an RA, way too many expectations, bar is set way too high for everyone, and the entire programs was setup for failure. So anyways, the months leading up to doing the job was all training and the training that still sticks with me today is the crisis and trauma training. We were taught to look for signs of mental crisis’s, signs of sexual assault, and even medical emergencies, then to take the appropriate steps to help. Knowing the signs is very beneficial when working with people or even just being around other people because when an emergency or tragedy strikes, you will be prepared to help. Since I received the training, I have helped several people get the help they’ve needed.

A training that I felt was a waste of my time and devaluing was a cultural diversity training when I was an RA. My boss was very anti-establishment and anti-police. She hosted a training on how to professionaly engage with people of color. She stated that the ways we’ve been taught are racist at the core and devalue people of color. She continued on with her training blaming white males for societies problems, that they are the cause for her stress and mistrust of organizations. The summary of the training was trat people of color differently, with dignity and respect and treat white people disrepect and approach them with caution. This was a very useless and racist training for me, she insulted myself and 3/4 of the staff working for the department of housing. It was everything opposite of inclusivity and open-minded. She was let go not that long after this training.
