Of the companies listed in the “Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For® 2020”, I chose to focus on companies in the manufacturing, transportation, or energy sectors as those are the fields of interest for myself. Companies like Stryker, NVIDIA, Hilcorp Energy Company, and NuStart Energy L.P. all focus on things like team, people, and culture, which make them more inclusive and inviting for other people to join their companies. Of the companies mentioned, over 94% of their employees say they’re proud of where they work. Being proud of your job is important, allowing employees to feel proud make better employees and will generate a self-perpetuating culture of inclusive within the company.
When I grow up, I want to be a manager. But a cool manager, like one that gives out high-fives and buy’s everyone donuts on Friday. The manager I strive to be would have the characteristics of accepting everyone for who they are, focus on what the employees strives in to keep them engaged, be a resource and advocate for my employees, and one who listen and understands their concerns, opinions, and recommendations. Acceptance is a key personality trait to being an effective manager. Everyone has different experiences, have different traumas, and triggers, managers should know how to help their employees. Focus on what the employee well at and let them excel.
The most challenging aspect of being a manager would probably be handling disgruntled employees as differences in personalities can clash creating riffs in the workplace and culture. This is where being inclusive and being an advocate becomes useful as you can give your employees the resources they need to work out their differences.
