Labor Unions Pros or Cons

While conducting my research on labor unions it is clear this has been a program conducted by employees that is gaining recognition. Although there are many pros and cons to a labor union, I still believe this is an individual choice for an employee to join. Furthermore, data collected demonstrated that since 2024 there has been an approximate 16 million employees that joined a union. Although this may seem like a high number it’s only about an 11.1% increase, which evidently was a slight decrease from last year. Which can suggest labor unions will only become popular due to employee favoritism.

Furthermore, some of the pros to being in an organized labor union is that it’s for “the workers.” This means that it is supposed to help employees advance and be protected. These advancements can be seen as employees receiving higher wages, potentially better benefits, regulated working conditions, job security, and much more. Additionally, with labor unions they can be viewed as more employees driven meaning they have more of a say with certain policies. For example, unions are there to offer support and advocacy for employees so if they feel as if an unfair work environment is taking place. The union would then take the proceeding of supporting and protecting the employee by conducting a thorough investigation.

Although there are many pros to being part of a union there are also cons and concerns to joining. Some of these can include unions favoring seniority which can delay career advancement for others. Which can make it harder to promote also potentially causing newer employees to get laid off. Additionally, employees also need to pay a portion of their income to the union. Which for some may not have an impact but for others this can be a burden.

As mentioned, labor unions have their pros and cons when it comes to joining the organization. Therefore, an employee should take the time to acquire whether joining would be in their best interest or not.
