Throughout my life, I have never known anyone that has been a part of a Union. Until about a year ago when I had gotten a part-time job following an internship I through my company joined a Union. I am a part of the NECA IBEW Electrical Union. I have never seen Unions prior as something that was of a necessity however as I have learned more about Unions I do see why they are necessary. Pros to Unions are that they demand higher wages and better benefits, protect workers, and set trends for the new workforces. Cons include requiring dues for the Union, no individuality, drive-up the cost, and difficulty firing workers. Looking at and contrasting my source and what was learned in this week’s material, my source stated that Unions have more political power and push an agenda much easier in politics. I do not believe this is correct Unions should not have any push in the Political agenda. In contrast between my source and the course material for this week, there was one big difference and that was in the individuality perspective. Our notes state that through collective bargaining between, employers, managers, and employees they will compromise with each side in order to make sure all sides are heard. Through the article that I read states that there is no individuality which I believe is false because everyone elects a person to represent them in this process. So individuality is displayed through democracy in these Unions. I still am a little shaky on the fact that I am in a Union however more and more I do come to realize that they are necessary and I do support the need for Unions in order to protect workers.
