Week 1 – Blog Post: The Case for Recruitment & Selection

  1. Why might organizations decide to allocate more resources toward marketing or product design rather than using those same resources to do a really good job in employee recruitment and selection?

In a competitive industry with multiple similar products, having the most talented group of employees is not enough to differentiate yourself from different companies looking to make a profit in the industry. The only way to carve out a spot in a competitive industry is by investing in product design and developing innovative products that differ from what is already on the market. Once your unique product is developed, a company must articulate the value that it brings to a consumer. This is done by investing in a creative and large-scale marketing campaign. While it is true that having a talented group of employees will save costs and accurately accomplish tasks along the way, even the most talented of employees will not make a company profitable in the long term if they are not delivering any kind of value to the consumers.

2. What are the potential strengths and weaknesses of an organization’s decision to not prioritize recruitment and selection in favor of a focus on other aspects of the business?

The strengths of prioritizing other areas besides recruitment and selection are the potential for developing a loyal, niche that will consistently purchase the good or service that the company is selling, and the potential to develop a truly groundbreaking product that delivers something to a customer that they have never had before. These are strengths because these are direct ways to profit that will be a consistent revenue stream. Talented and hardworking employees do not guarantee profit, however, there are strengths to investing in this area as well. Talented employees will save companies money throughout all steps of the process, and as long as talent is equally distributed throughout all levels of the company, processes can become more efficient.

Hi Kyle, I agree, there are many employees who do a great job and add value to their companies but they aren’t everything. Those groups or types of employees are a bonus for those companies, but it is the service and product most of all that get the attention of customers and increase profit. Therefore, they do turn to market and product design more than employee recruitment and selection.
