Kyla Knott Week 1 Blog

Hi everyone, my name is Kyla Knott and this blog is for my MGMT 453 class. For this post, I looked at three companies from the 2020 Best Companies to Work For. Google, Cisco, and Publix Super Markets. These companies have strong HR practices that make them stand out and create great places to work (Great Place to Work, 2020).

Google is famous for its employee perks and focus on innovation. Their HR practices emphasize flexibility, personal growth, and a collaborative work environment (Great Place to Work, 2020). Cisco really shines with its focus on work life balance and employee wellness programs, showing how important it is to prioritize employees’ well being (Great Place to Work, 2020). Publix Super Markets is unique because it empowers its employees through stock options and profit sharing, which encourages employees to feel personally invested in the company’s success (Great Place to Work, 2020).

As a manager, I want to take some of these approaches with my team. I’d prioritize creating an environment where people feel valued, supported, and able to grow. Things like offering development opportunities, recognizing achievements, and ensuring a healthy work life balance would be key. HR functions like recruitment, training, and employee engagement will help me build a strong and motivated team.

One challenge I think I’ll face as a manager is balancing employee satisfaction with meeting business goals. It’s not always easy to make sure employees feel supported while also hitting company targets, but by learning from companies like Google, Cisco, and Publix, I think I can create a team where both goals are met. With the right approach, I can build a workplace where people feel appreciated and motivated to succeed.
