Job Descriptions-More than Just Words on a Page

Job descriptions are truly more than just words on a page; they shape real life job outcomes in the workplace. It is important to envision job descriptions as a live document of information that will directly influence may key factors including what type of applicants will be drawn to apply, performance evaluation of that employee when hired, and even company culture by providing a peak into the ethos of the organization. As a potential applicant reads the job description, it should provide enough information for them to visualize the overall aspects of the job; what is expected of them, what a day in the life might look like, and the company’s overall culture. The applicant can then take the picture that the description painted of the job and attempt to envision themselves in that role. If they think it would be a good fit, they will apply and if not, they move on to other potential opportunitise. This weeds out the people who assume that this job or company is not the right fit for them and will send applicants your way that see themselves thriving.

So how can you improve your job descriptions, you might ask? Well here are some tips to do just that! Firstly, your employees have a unique insight into what the job entails, therefore utilize that point of view by including them in writing and reviewing job descriptions. Secondly, keep in mind that the language you use can affect how the job and company as a whole is perceived to potential applicants. With this in mind, leaning towards clear, inclusive and concise descriptions, while still ensuring all the key expectations are listed, is a good idea. Being too detailed and too non-specific are both recipes for disaster, so try to find the middle ground. Lastly, while you may have specific ideas of what you currently need from this role, ensure to leave space for growth and innovation by using motivating language and maybe even including aspirational goals; as apposed to just providing duties required. The biggest takeaway however, is that job descriptions are a living document therefore do not be afraid to revisit and revise them regularly.
