Effective and Ineffective trainings

I played club volleyball from seventh grade until I was a junior in high school. During that time we had yearly online training for our tournaments as we would have to score, line judge and referee. The training was lengthy and boring. We watched long videos where the speed could not be adjusted and the instruction was robotic and monotoned. We were then tested on what we learned and had to pass all aspects when our team was refereeing a game. While it was important that I knew how to do each of the tasks during a game, it took away from actually playing volleyball. We were never guaranteed to ref in a tournament. What was hours and hours of instruction was not needed when we reffed 30% of the time. It would’ve made more sense to get together as a team and go over the rules together with our coaches. Everybody did the training and did a good job but the delivery was not up to par with the times and it did not provide a great overview of what we were supposed to do as it was too involved. That is probably 10 hours of my life I could have spent doing other things.

A training I really enjoyed was when I was hired to be a caregiver. On my first day I was to shadow another caregiver who was working with the client I would also be taking care of. I shadowed multiple caregivers throughout my first week and got to know what the client’s expectations were. The managers really communicated to me everything I needed to know and it was nice that I got a hands on experience whereas it was lacking in the volleyball class I had to take. The caregivers told me what they usually do and it allowed me to ask questions if I wanted to do something differently. Prior to this I had instructional videos in addition to orientation with the company to go over state safety procedures. This training was really effective as it had tiers to it ending with the job shadow. Without this I think it would’ve been really hard to adjust and I wouldn’t have gotten comfortable as quickly as I did.

Everybody’s learning style is different but there are common trends in what makes a class or training effective and ineffective and that is the learning by doing style.
