Out of 100 companies, I selected American Express, Delta Airlines and Carmax. They all ranked very high in making their employees feel welcome, they like their contribution to the community, they feel like they are being treated fairly, they can approach their management, and can rely on ethical management management.
While each is a different industry; transportation, retail, and financial services and insurance they still manage to put people first. When employees were asked why they enjoy working where they are a constant answer of “people” was said. It can be hard to navigate many personalities, and many wants and needs in all tiers of the company but having good communication skills and creating an environment where people feel welcome to bring ideas and concerns is crucial to having good company morale.
Awhile back, I spent time in my dad’s office interviewing some of his employees and what motivates them. I used a series of 12 questions to gain an overall understanding of what has kept them motivated and coming to work for many years. Just like with Delta, Carmax and American Express what motivated them was the people they interacted with on a daily basis as well as the compassion they had for their job and the customers they worked with. As a manager, I would like to emulate the great work environment my dad has created. This can be done by becoming credible and building an expertise in the area of work you do, creating the right policies and procedures, and having a leadership style that promotes growth, learning, and motivation.
