My last job (not my current job) was titled Production. When I first applied for the position, I had no idea what the job could entail. Honestly, I was in need of consistent work and hours so I was very eager to take on anything. When I arrived for the interview, my future employer handed me a job description to read through. I have attached the description that I received below. This did not help me understand the potential position anymore than my own guess work had done. I remember during the interview, asking my future employer, “What does this job look like day to day?” Now, since I have worked in that position, the description makes a lot of sense. However, at the time, not knowing anything about the company or the industry, I was very confused. The job itself is some what of a floating position. The employee works with the metal pieces with whatever stage they need you in. This can involve things like grinding, cleaning, organizing, breaking out, DA-ing, and many other activities that I had no concept of initially.

Job Title: Production
Reports To: Shop Foreman
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Summary: Fills in throughout the Shop as needed and performs duties such as grinding, deburring, sawing, cutting and tapping parts, assembling parts using rivet guns and electric or battery operated drills, cleaning up, hardwaring parts, lifting, moving and packaging parts and uses a pallet jack and forklift by performing the following duties.
Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Grinds and deburrs parts.*
- Assembles products.*
- Provides assistance to others while parts are being formed or hardwared.*
- Loads and unloads trucks.*
- Packages and labels parts for delivery.*
- Hardwares parts.*
- Cleans by emptying trash, sweeping and organizing work and break areas.*
- Assists with inventory counts.*
- Assists with maintenance and/or projects.*
- Follows directions and works independently at times.*
- May help or train other employees as assigned. *
- Other duties as assigned.*
Qualifications:

Experience:
Forklift experience and experience with hand tools helpful.
Language Ability:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals in English. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence in English. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization in English.
Math Ability:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
