Typical v. Maximal

This week we are comparing different types of candidates, employees, and their qualities. In this hypothetical, I am plagued with choosing between two employees. Avery is a high performing individual. She can perform very well and above average when needed, however, she overall can get bored and distracted when the pressure is off. Jamie is rather opposite. She is very consistent and dedicated, however, with high pressure situations, she still delivers the same performance as always, nothing more, nothing less.

If I were to choose between the two, I would pick Jamie. Her consistency is predictable and something I can work with. I know that she will do the work I task her with and get the job done.

If the position were part time or on-call I would choose Avery. I think that she has a good skillset to respond well when needed and when their is pressure. A type of job where she has down time and then stellar performance every once in a while I believe would help her to flourish. She is very valuable because of the way that she can perform at such a high rate when there are emergencies, deadlines, or stressors. On the other side, I believe that Jamie will do well in a consistent, full-time job. Something where she knows what to expect and what is expected of her. These traits are really valuable with mundane work that isn’t as exciting or stressful, but still needs done. Both of these candidates have good qualities. They just happen to shine in different areas and it is important that the hiring manger knows that.
