Human Resources: Big vs Small

I have had a lot of experience with good and bad human resource departments. I have found that the larger the company, the less helpful the HR department can be. When I was employed at a smaller company, I had my manager’s phone number and she would get back to me within a day or two. She was also very accommodating and understanding and would help make my life simpler. As I am now experiencing what it’s like to work for a large corporate company, I am regretting leaving my smaller company. All questions and concerns are run through a website with AI bots that answer questions. I am very confused on my assignments as I interviewed for a field engineer role and have been hired on as an estimator. They are not accommodating when it comes to office location even though it would have made my life a lot simpler and saved me money on rent payments. The only way I have found to overcome these problems is to talk to real people in the office. I have found that they are more understanding and can help me through the problems at hand. What this all means is that structure is not always the best thing. Human contact and communication can be more helpful and can create a better employee culture. The larger companies have so many measures in places that it deprives employees of control and ends up hurting the company’s culture. This experience has made me realize the benefits of the a small company and that I ultimately would like to end up at a company that I have free will and control.
