Compensation is something that controls many of our life’s decisions. I’m sure everyone has heard the expression ” Money doesn’t buy happiness” however it can buy financial freedom. Especially in a world as expensive as our, the compensation we receive has never mattered more. I myself recently turned down a job offer to go with another company that was paying more. I loved the culture and people at my first company but sadly had to turn my back on that opportunity due to money. This may look like a shallow way to live but is the sad reality of wanting to be successful in today’s society. Recently, Portland had an open town meeting where they said that 65% of people’s salaries go toward their mortgage in Portland and 92% in Bend. These statistics are what make compensation so important and give compensation the authority to control so much of our lives. I do not see a change in the importance of compensation coming any time soon. People want to be able to provide for themselves and will put aside their happiness to do so. Our job and the compensation we get is the only thing that gives us some freedom over our lives. I myself will always pick the job with the highest compensation no matter what, until I feel confident that money will not be an issue in my life.
