Blog #3 – Project Job Tracker

This post will take on a different tone than my last two. I was able to introduce myself and talk about my past for a bit. Since I got that pretty well covered, I want to discuss the present and the future. My current and primary focus has been my capstone project. It’s important for me to do well in this course, as I both need it to graduate and it is helpful in building skills for my career in software development.

It has been some time since I’ve worked on a collaborative school project, but thankfully my prior work experience was collaborative in nature. This has allowed me to adjust to the change in pace. My group members have been proactive and well-organize so far. This is contrasting to some of my past group projects, where I’ve had group members not contribute meaningfully to a project (it’s clear early-on when this will be the case). It might be because students take the capstone project quite seriously, as it can be a resume builder. It could also be that students have matured at this point in the program. Either way, I can tell the project will be very enjoyable with this group.

The idea of our project is to build a web application that will help job hunters track which jobs they’ve applied to (as well as details about the specific jobs). The project looks straightforward on the surface, but nothing is ever as simple as it seems. We have a vision for our application to do a multitude of tasks such as supporting user authentication (including google account authentication), storing files, job skill matching analytics, storing contacts, tracking job applications, and having a job posting web scraper (user enters link and a posting automatically populates within our app). It is an ambitious project to be certain. However, anything worth building is not easy to build. I look forward to the challenge.
