When I think of training I think of hands on with a guide or instructor giving you tips on what works and what doesn’t. I think I learn my best by watching and practicing with someone there to ask questions. My most recent job training has been one of the best trainings I have had. I watched over my boss for about a week learning the ins and outs of our software and how to use each function. Then I moved to my own desk which is near my boss. I was able to work on my own and reach out as much as I needed if I were to get stuck or run into something that I haven’t learned. It was very “hands on” and effective as it “made me feel part of the team and understand the organization” (Wk 6 lecture 1,3) She was always there to give me help, but allowed me to figure out my own ways of doing things.
The worst training in my eyes is just telling someone what to do without visuals or a walk through. I find it very difficult to remember steps without going through them and seeing how it is done. I took a class at a different university a while back and it was my first online class. The entire class was setup with quizzes and assignments and the only help was the textbook. There was no videos or lectures at all and the teacher never responded helpfully to any emails. It ended up being one of the most difficult classes and I did not learn much at all. The lack of instruction or videos on how to navigate the material was very tough to handle.
