This week we learned about how important job descriptions can be. I have first hand experience with this in a very disappointing way. My first job in high school was as a delivery driver. When I accepted the job I went in and worked for an entire month and did not get to deliver one thing. I was stuck behind the counter working at the store. It was very disappointing and lead to me leaving the job. It was very frustrating doing work that was not part of my job and I was very confused and not qualified for what they had me doing. I never would have taken the job if they had a more detailed description. I think one issue with their bad description would be disappointed unmotivated employees, and higher turnover rate. They need to update this so employees have a better understanding of their role and know what they are signing up for. Also having listed “tasks and KSAO’s” will really help potential employees know what they need to know prior to applying. This will lead to more motivated employees, less grievances, and lower turnover for the company. It may be harder to have super detailed and updated job descriptions because the companies are always adapting and growing with time, but the descriptions should adapt with the company as well so everyone is on the same page. This may also take some time and extra money to make sure they are always updated and through but I think it will pay off in terms of production and lower turnover.
