I have implemented the location tracking sections of code that I have written into the larger app. There are still a few things to work out but I would consider it largely successful. I have also written another simple app that accesses the device’s compass and gathers its heading. So far I have only gotten this to work on my individual device, running as a solo app. To me, migrating the work into the larger project for everyone to use has proven more difficult than actually generating my portions of the project individually. You need to be pretty knowledgeable about the framework and structure that your are working in if you want to get everything working right. All of my other group members seem to be making great headway on their portions of the project as well. I am thankful to be in a group of high functioning and unabashed individuals for my final project. This is the most comfortable that I’ve felt in a group setting over my course of the program.

Job Interviews

I had two job interviews this past week. In fact, they were on the same day, just a couple hours apart. Both were titled as “Junior Software Developer”, but they seemed to be doing very different things.

The first interview I did was with a regional telecommunications company. The interview was not super technical as they said they would be conducting a more technical one later. Overall it went really well. They just wanted to get to know me as a person and asked general ‘culture fit’ questions. I also had a chance to ask them about their technology stack, and they said they mostly run Microsoft, so C# on VS Code and JIRA. Thankfully for me, my brother is a software engineer that works with the exact same technologies, so I have been working with him in preparation for the technical interview to get more familiar with them. After learning about the company and how they seem to treat their employees, this is definitely a place I would like to work.

The second interview was not great but okay. I learned early on in the interview that the role I would be filling was heavily based on cybersecurity; a field that I don’t have a lot of experience with. So it goes without saying that during the cybersecurity questions of the interview, I don’t think I did very well. After the interview I felt as though I represented myself well and that the interviewers recognized that I am a competent programmer, but also that I don’t know anything about cybersecurity. I would be very surprised if I was moved to the next stage in the process and that’s fine because if I’m being honest, security stuff just isn’t all that interesting to me.

Here’s to hoping I hear from the first company soon and it’s good news!

Project Update Our team project is coming along really well.
