It was a good experience and demonstrated what working with a client will be like. The meeting was relatively informal, and the sponsor started the meeting by briefing us on what exactly satellite tracking with ham radios entailed, and what they were looking for with the app. The essential idea is that a user can view a list of satellites that are above the horizon (meaning they can be contacted); then they can select one of these satellites, the user’s camera will then be brought up and using AR, the app will display the general area where the satellite is in the sky so that the user then knows where they need to point their antenna to make contact. There will also be information specific to the selected satellite displayed for the user to view. Below is a simple prototype of what the AR screen could look like if the user is tracking the SES 1 satellite.

The sponsor meeting was also helpful in that it gave us a starting point and got our group talking about the different ways that we could try and set up our development environments.

Project Planning

Planning the project has been a natural progression from the sponsor meeting, it has just involved a lot of putting what we’ve been discussing into writing. There has also been some prototyping and planning about how the app should navigate, all of which has been smooth and productive. The most difficult part of the planning so far is setting up a development environment. The product was originally requested as an iOS app. iOS AR is developed using the Apple ARKit, which requires XCode to run. Finding a way to develop for ARKit using a windows machine has proven difficult, and I am not even sure it can be done. The sponsor did however say that they are “not married” to the iOS request and said that an Android app would be fine. If that’s the case, we could all develop the AR using Android ARCore. Right now, we are still deciding what is the best way forward, but right now, I think that this is the most likely outcome. Either way, we should begin development in the next few days, and my team and I are looking forward to it!

Sponsor Meeting A few days ago, my team and I had our initial sponsor meeting.
