Is Money Everything?

When I was offered the opportunity to take a different position in my current company, I was worried. This was during college when I was nearing graduation and I told myself that I wouldn’t get “stuck” in a fast food company all the life. I also couldn’t see myself working my way up and having a career but we were in the middle of COVID and opportunities were limited so I had agreed to go through the interview process.

At the end of the interview they shared the compensation and benefits for the role and I was shocked. I truly understood from that moment on why the tenure for leadership positions had a 20-30 year average and most seemed to enjoy their positions. The offer included a more appealing medical, vision, eye and dental plan that would be more reasonable as a single adult, a company car with full expenses paid and a personal office. The offer also included 25% salary increase which was hard to resist as the goal for a newly graduated student was to find stability and comfort.

I definitely think the compensation is what initially drew me into the position and made me want to go for the new opportunity. Over the years, I have found that the company has more to offer than I previously thought. The culture, opportunities to grow and develop, as well as new leadership that led to great structure helped me realize that this would be a great place to spend my career.
