Is Compensation a Motivator

Throughout my working career, I have come to the realization that compensation is a top motivator when it comes to certain aspects of a job position. This could be an indicator whether an employee may decide to leave or stay in a current position. This could also be the reason they decide to accept or decline a promotion. Overall, as a company it is important to stay consistent with compensation. This will keep employees motivated and dedicated to their current role. Additionally, with compensation it’s also important for a company to stay competitive in the labor market. Due to the constant change of job openings, future trends, and skills demand this could potentially be an indicator of whether a company will succeed or not among employees.

Furthermore, in my personal experience when I was given the opportunity to be in a leadership role as a supervisor I had to kindly decline. This was not because I did not want the position. If anything, at that moment it felt like I had just lost an opportunity to advance my career. However, with the tasks, responsibilities, and work hours they required of me the compensation was not equal. Additionally, I was also honest with the employer stating my current pay and benefits were similar to what they were offering. When questioning if negotiating wages was at least an option that was declined due to the company feeling this was the best option they could offer. This unfortunately answered my question right away; this would not be the career move I desired.

As a company it is important to be prepared when it comes to compensation. In this scenario the company should have been more open about negotiating wages. It would have least given the impression that the employer is willing to retain talent and maintain equity. For an employee this can become a perspective as to whether the employer values their skills and talents when it comes to compensation.
