IPIP Results and Reactions: The Helper

Test Results Summary

According to the Enneagram test, I am most likely a Type 2 (The Helper) with a 2w3 (Two with a Three wing) and a Social (so) instinctual variant. This combination suggests that I am a caring, supportive, and people-focused person. I enjoy being needed and often feel most fulfilled when I am helping others. The Type 2 core shows I value connection and emotional support, while the 3 wing adds a sense of ambition, charm, and a desire to be seen as successful and appreciated. The social instinct shows that I’m especially focused on groups, teamwork, and building strong relationships within my community or workplace. I often step into roles where I can support others and make sure everyone feels included. I naturally pick up on the needs of others and try to offer help before being asked. At the same time, I can be very goal-oriented, which helps me stay motivated and focused in a group setting. I also enjoy encouraging others to succeed and often feel happiest when I am contributing to a positive environment. This personality type reflects someone who is generous, outgoing, and eager to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

Strengths and Weaknesses as Seen by an Employer

An employer looking at these results might see several strong qualities in me as a potential employee. First, my Type 2 Helper personality shows that I am caring, cooperative, and motivated to support others. This makes me a strong team player who values relationships and customer service. I am likely to be the person who helps coworkers without being asked and creates a positive atmosphere in the workplace. My 2w3 wing adds drive and people skills, making me a great fit for roles that require both empathy and professionalism, such as public relations, healthcare, or leadership. The social instinct suggests I work well in groups, enjoy team projects, and value making everyone feel included and heard. I am likely to build strong relationships with clients and coworkers, which can lead to a more connected and productive team. Employers would probably appreciate my mix of compassion and work ethic.

However, employers might also notice some challenges. As a Helper, I may have trouble setting boundaries or saying “no,” which could lead to burnout or taking on more work than I should. My desire to be needed might make it hard to handle criticism at times, and I might put others’ needs ahead of my own well-being. Also, the need to feel valued might cause me to depend too much on external approval. This could lead to stress if I feel unappreciated or overlooked. Knowing these patterns, I can work on self-awareness and balance making sure I take care of myself while continuing to support those around me.

I actually have the same Enneagram Type 2 as you. I really relate to the caring and supportive side of the Helper. It’s interesting how you described the 3 wing and social instinct adding ambition and a focus on groups. I don’t have the same wing or instinct but I can definitely see how those qualities shape your personality and work style.

I also struggle sometimes with setting boundaries and making sure I don’t take on too much so I appreciate how you pointed that out. It’s a real challenge for Type 2s to balance wanting to help others with taking care of ourselves. Your self-awareness about this really stood out to me.

How do you usually handle that balance? I’m always curious about how others with this type manage it.

Hi Tessa,

I really enjoyed reading your post—your description of the 2w3 with a social instinct came across as incredibly warm and driven. It’s clear that you bring a lot of heart to your relationships and team environments, and your ability to pick up on others’ needs before they even ask is such a valuable strength, especially in collaborative settings.

I also appreciated your honesty about the challenges that can come with being a Helper. Balancing care for others with boundaries is definitely tricky, but it sounds like you already have strong self-awareness around that. Your blend of compassion and ambition makes you a great fit for leadership roles where people and outcomes both matter. Thanks for sharing such a well-rounded reflection.

Hi Tessa,

I was a type 3 on the enneagram test and enjoyed seeing how the two personality types were similar and different. Both our personality types are goal oriented and ambitious and your post helped me to realize that. I also found it interesting to read about the challenges of being a helper and how that could be a weakness to a potential employer. My enneagram results did not specify this but I also find myself having a hard time setting boundaries and overextending myself so I definitely see the similarity between our personality types there as well.
