Through my internship search and my job search, I have gone through a fair number of interviews. My favorite interviews are conversation-style interviews. These interviews are very personal and unstructured. The interviewers would get a sense of me, and I would get a sense of them and the company culture. They would then ask about school and work experience and what I wanted to do with my life. I think the unstructured and personal type interview is especially effective for college career fairs/ recruiting. We as students tend to not have extensive experience or skills a super structured interview where knowledge is tested is somewhat ineffective. I think that recruiters that recruit from a university know what they are getting into. They are getting someone green with a degree that is eager to start their career. I have one interview in my mind that was the least effective. From the get-go, I could sense that this was a filter interview. I could tell she was just trying to get through this first round of interviews so she could hand off a smaller group of applicants to someone else to deal with. The lady that was interviewing me was not personal, she worked in HR so didn’t know the ins and outs of the job I was applying for, and I could see her going down a checklist of standardized questions that she probably asked every kid. Overall It turned me off from the company, especially after coming from a small company where there was a big sense of community.
