Interview Experience

One of most memorable interviews I had was for an office bookkeeper position. It was for a multi year internship to gain experience in management.

This office was hiring a management student in order to help in providing experience and to mentor the student. The job entailed doing financial data entries, monthly bills, payroll, taxes, etc. it was a very appealing opportunity for me. The interview was conducted in person, but casual and relaxing in a way. I was interviewed by the boss himself. it was at a small business so it felt inviting and non stressful. The interview process was very conversational and conducted in a peer type conversational style. He asked me about my experiences, goals if I were to be hired, as well as what I felt I needed to work on the most.

I felt that the interview was very informal, which may have helped calm my nerves. That could have been the intentions of the boss now looking back on the experience. I think the positives of this style of interview was it really let me answer questions in a normal conversational manner. It didn’t really feel stressful or like I had something to prove. I think his style of interview allowed me and other interviewees to express who they were and really let their personalities show. If I had to critique him on what he could do better, I would say maybe have a little more structure to the interview. It felt like he didn’t quite have a direction on where he wanted to take the interview, but again I feel like that was a big strength in it as well. I think his interview was calculated and brought out a different aspect of each applicant. At the end of the day this is the best interview atmosphere I have had, but also most unorganized.
