Backward Design is a planning process to design courses based on the theoretical foundations of Understanding by Design (McTighe & Wiggins, 2005).
In this process we need to set the stage for learning. In order to do so we begin the course design process backwards; that is with the end in mind.
- First, we determine the desired results or learning outcomes.
- Then, we develop learning assessments that will help learners achieve the desired results; that is the evidence of their learning.
- After that, we create learning activities that will lead learners to provide that evidence of their understanding.
